An Elkin man and woman each netted 31 felony and six misdemeanor charges for breaking and entering and larceny, according to warrants issued Nov. 15, 17, 20 and 29 and Dec. 1.
According to the warrants by Det. Ricky J. Lyall of the Alleghany County Sheriff's Department, 32-year-old Harold Dean Smith and 29-year-old Tina Marie Lyon are each charged with 16 counts of felony larceny and 15 counts of felony breaking and entering, and five counts of misdemeanor larceny and one count of misdemeanor breaking and entering a motor vehicle.
The duo was also wanted in connection with similar crimes in Wilkes, Yadkin and Iredell counties.
The pair allegedly broke into businesses and residences in the county over a period from Jan. 1 through Nov. 3, with the majority of the offenses committed in August and September.
Stolen items included power tools, firearms, jewelry and air compressors. The total value of all the stolen goods was estimated at $17,781.
According to Lyall, the case was broken when the pair broke into the home of Warren D. Baird on Rose Road in Laurel Springs and stole a Marlin .22 rifle. The rifle was sold to an individual in Iredell County on Nov. 7 and was recovered by the Iredell County Sheriff's Department's detective division, Lyall said.
The rifle had been sold by the two suspects in the case, Lyall said.
