Thanksgiving blaze destroys a rental property in Laurel SpringsBy ROBBY LUCKEStaff A Thanksgiving night blaze burned for three hours and resulted in a total loss to a rental property on N.C. 18 in Laurel Springs. Chief Hubert Wagoner of the Laurel Springs Volunteer Fire Department said no one was hurt in the fire. The occupants were not at home when the fire started, but returned later, he said. According to Wagoner's report, the fire may have come from an electrical short and originated with a kitchen stove. |

The home is the property of Ray Hamm of Sparta and was inhabited by Crystal DeLeon and her family.
Deleon lived in the mobile home with her husband and five children, according to Laurel Springs Fireman Tony Miller.
Firefighters were called at 6:36 p.m. Laurel Springs responded with all 25 of its firefighters and three trucks. Firemen were on the scene for about two and one half hours. The Sparta Fire Department assisted with eight of its personnel and two trucks. Wagoner said the departments used about 3,000 gallons of water on the blaze. They lost about one-half of a load of water when a hose burst on a pump, he said.
Property damage was estimated at $50,000. "It burned up everything the
people owned," Wagoner said.
