Celebrating Veterans Day - Local veterans from The Bruce Wayne Osborne Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7034 held memorial services on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Town water extension is planned

The Sparta Town Council on Nov. 7 voted to apply for grant funds to extend town water lines to the new Alleghany County Health Department complex, while seeking to use those funds to do the work "in-house."

Unemployment hike continues

"It's hard to find any good news to report." Alleghany Employment Security Commission Director Arville Scott said in an interview Tuesday that the bleak unemployment picture here is likely to get worse before it gets better.
