Without much fanfare, the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners accepted the resignation of Tax Administrator Cheryl Jones Monday after a brief closed session.
The resignation was effective Friday, Oct. 13 and no prior notice was given.
County Manager Don Adams declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding Jones' resignation, noting that the matter was a personnel issue and thus not privy to public knowledge.
Jones could not be reached for comment by presstime on Tuesday.
None of the commissioners commented on the matter during the meeting. Adams said that the search for a new administrator will begin immediately, with the decision likely falling to the new board. The election on Nov. 7 will lead to the swearing in of two new commissioners, as former chair Democrat Walter Jones and Republican Joe Roberts are not seeking re-election.
Adams said that he does not expect to have the position filled until December. "I will be presenting applicants to the new board sometime in December," he said.
Until that time, long-time tax office employee Mary Walker will be serving as interim administrator for the office. She celebrated 20 years with the county recently at a gathering on Oct. 10.
Walker has served as interim administrator several times in the past, but has declined offers to take the position full time.
Jones, a former tax office employee who left the office and then
returned to take over as administrator, took over the top tax job in the
county from Tina Jordan.
