The fourth annual Alleghany County Demolition Derby and the Mountain Heritage Festival will share the spotlight this Saturday in Sparta.

The derby will be held Saturday at the Carlisle Higgins Agricultural Fairgrounds in Sparta beginning at 6 p.m. The event is the final part of the Alleghany County Fair.

The Heritage Festival will be held in town Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The event is sponsored by, and will be a benefit for, the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce.

Preceding the event on Friday night will be the Music Jamboree at Sparta School. Local musicians and other acts will perform beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $5 each.

Portions of Main Street, including the intersection with N.C. 18, will be closed to traffic on Saturday.

Saturday's activities will include arts and crafts, live demonstrations, exhibits, mountain and bluegrass music, dancing, children's games and activities and numerous food vendors.

Chamber Executive Director Bob Choate said the town will be decorated this week with traditional hay, scarecrows and corn shucks.

"We're expecting a really good festival this year," he said. Other activities will include donkey rides, a space walk, face painting, clowns, games for children and other items.
