Absentee voting by mail is expected to begin soon in Alleghany County after a court decision delayed ballot work, according to Alleghany Director of Elections Karen K. Fender.
According to information from the State Board of Elections, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals reaffirmed a decision by the district court to not place the name of Ralph Nader on North Carolina's ballots as a presidential candidate.
The action came last Friday, Sept. 15. The Nader 2000 Primary Committee had asked for a temporary stay until the case was heard by the court of appeals.
Reform party candidates Pat Buchanan and Ezola Foster will appear on ballots, but Nader's Green Party will not.
County elections officials were given state approval to proceed with the printing of absentee ballots as soon as possible.
Before the court case, the ballots were set to be available for absentee voting by mail Monday, Sept. 18.
The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming election is Oct. 13. One stop absentee voting begins on Oct. 16 and ends on Nov. 3.
The general election will be held on Nov. 7.
