Alleghany County was recently granted $400,000 under the Community Development Block Grant program to help repair substandard housing. The announcement came at the county commissioner's regular meeting Monday.
The county applied for funding last year for the program, but was not approved. Up until this year, the funds were granted on a competitive basis, with a disproportionate amount usually going to eastern North Carolina.
However, this year the funds were awarded to counties on a lottery basis.
