State Secretary of Commerce Rick Carlisle will visit Sparta today, Sept. 21, at 5:15 p.m.
Carlisle is scheduled to appear at the Alleghany County Courthouse for a public meeting. Everyone is invited to attend.
If court is still in session, the meeting will be moved to the Alleghany County Senior Citizens' Center across the street. A note will be posted on the door of the courthouse if the event is moved.
The meeting was originally scheduled to be held in the courtroom to allow for more room for public attendance.
Topics of discussion should include the current economic status of the county, planning for economic development and other items of interest. According to a news release from the Alleghany County Economic
Development Corporation (ACEDC), which is sponsoring the event, Carlisle will be briefed on the current state of job losses and business closings in Alleghany County and strategies that are being implemented to deal with the situation.
Also attending the meeting will be both the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners and the Sparta Town Council.
The boards are not holding official meetings during the event, but do plan to attend and will be seated together near the front of the room, according to County Manager Don Adams.
Adams is a member of ACEDC, in addition to being county manager.
