Fair a success in spite of ride snafu

Despite a last minute cancellation that left the midway attraction with fewer rides than expected, the Alleghany County Fair was a success this year.

Fair Chairperson Theresa Williams said that attendance was down a bit from last year. The final totals and the total money raised was not available as of presstime Tuesday.

Williams said that the committee will be tallying all the figures after the last part of the fair, the demolition derby, which is scheduled for Sept. 23.

The company providing midway entertainment had a subcontractor that was scheduled to bring rides cancel out, leaving the local fair with few rides than expected.

proved to be one of the top midway attractions at the fair.

Tomkins took first place overall in senior showmanship.

Williams said she would invite anyone in the community to come join the fair committee to help put on next year's event and find better midway entertainment.

"It's not an easy task," she noted. "You have to get what's coming through this area."

As for the rest of the fair, Williams said things were successful this year. "The committee has worked hard to improve the livestock shows," Williams said. "That's what the committee is proud about. That's what we're trying to do is promote agriculture."

Weather was a concern early in the week, but Williams said, "It turned out to be a nice week in the long run."
