Local school board selects new attorney

Surry County attorney Fredrick Gray Johnson was named the attorney for the Alleghany County School Board after a brief meeting Monday at 8:30 a.m.

Alleghany man nets manslaughter charge in Grayson accident

An Alleghany County man was charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving and driving under the influence (DUI) after a fatal accident that killed a Gold Hill farmer on U.S. 58 near Independence, Va. around 9 a.m. last Friday.

Teen pregnancy rates on the decline here

In Alleghany County, teen pregnancy rates have dropped significantly from last year. The rate for girls 15 to 19 dropped from 79.8 to 66.9 out of every 1,000.

New signs for school safety

The new pedestrian, school and bicycle crossing signs with black symbols on a "fluorescent yellow-green" background that have appeared in Alleghany and other area counties in recent weeks are part of a $2.7 million N.C. Board of Transportation project to improve safety.

Town picks attorney; Grandview work eyed

At a regular meeting on Sept. 5, Sparta Town Council appointed a new attorney to take the position of town attorney, recently vacated by Wm. Bynum Marshall.

Fair a success in spite of ride snafu
