Alleghany County's schools had a good year in ABC testing results, with all county schools at least meeting expected growth.

In addition, two county schools were ranked exemplary. Glade Creek earned honor for being a school of distinction for having more than 80 percent of its students at or above grade level, while Piney Creek earned additional honors as a school of excellence for having more than 90 percent of its students above grade level.

Alleghany High School and Sparta Elementary School met their expected growth goals that are set by the department of public instruction. Both fell short of the state's exemplary expectation. AHS missed exemplary status by one point, but showed significant gains in the percentage of students at grade level.

This year, 62 percent of AHS students were at grade level, while only 54.5 were considered at grade level last year.
