Youth horse show has 46 participants

A total of 46 youths participated in the Alleghany Horseman Association/4-H Youth Horse Show last Sunday.

Higher fees planned for out-of-towners

With the many problems pumping 10,000 gallons of water can create, the Town of Sparta is eyeing a plan to raise rates for those wishing to utilize town water to fill up swimming pools.

Foresters on the lookout for Southern pine beetles

N.C. Forest Service officials will conduct aerial surveillance in Alleghany, Ashe, Wilkes and other area counties this month in response to a worsening outbreak of Southern pine beetles, said Wilkes County Forester Jody Brady.

Helicopter safety training course held in Alleghany

Members of all police, fire and rescue departments in Alleghany County were invited to attend a helicopter safety training course last Saturday at Alleghany Memorial Hospital.

Unemployment rate hits 6.8 percent here

Unemployment rates are on the rise here and in neighboring Grayson County, Va., according to employment data.
