Several attend Memorial Day service

A number of local residents turned out to honor our country's fallen servicemen and women during a ceremony on the lawn of the Alleghany County Courthouse in Sparta.

The ceremony began at 10 a.m. with an invocation and a prayer by Elder Earl Baker, Chaplain of the Bruce Wayne Osborne Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7034.

Eldon Edwards, commander of the post, led the services.

Other speakers included post Quartermaster Harrol Blevins local post Senior Vice Commander Oscar "Doc" Evans, Junior Vice Commander Bob Shaner and Velma Blevins of the post's ladies auxiliary.

a Memorial Day service that was held Monday on the courthouse lawn in Sparta.

The ceremony ended with a gun salute. The VFW members also placed a wreath, individual flowers and a small flag at the memorial on the courthouse lawn.
