A fire safety class featuring a visit by Smokey the Bear will be held at Lowes Home Improvement Warehouse in Sparta on June 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Attending the event will be fire trucks and volunteer firemen from the county's five fire departments.
In case of rain, the event will be moved to June 17 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Smoke detectors and fire extinguishers will be given away, along with other prizes.
Other events will include information and demonstrations from the local office of emergency management, the State Department of Insurance, the State Fire Marshall's Office and the North Carolina Forestry Service. Fire extinguisher demonstrations, information on fire safety and prevention and other information will be available. A total of $10,000 will be donated to benefit the county's fire departments.
