Amnesty offer sent to parents in arrears

Parents who are currently behind on their child support payments will get a chance to repay their debt without risk of going to jail.

An amnesty program administered through the Alleghany County Department of Social Services will allow parents to pay off past child support debts without penalty or to make payment arrangements to clear up their records.

The program, which coincides closely with Father's Day, will run from June 5 through June 9. Only those who have fallen at least 60 days behind on support payments are eligible.

The court system can use methods such as credit reports, income withholdings and garnishments, holding tax returns, workman's compensation claims and unemployment payments to help recover overdue child support.

Pat Andrews, who handles the payments for the local office, said this is the perfect time for those behind on their payments to make things right without fear of penalties.

"This is their one chance to come in and not be picked up," Andrews said. "We will work out repayment plans or just whatever we need to do." Andrews said that a felony fugitive warrant can be filed against anyone who is at least six months behind on their child support.
