The regularly-scheduled meeting for the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners was put on hold Monday morning after the group failed to establish a quorum.

Of the five county commissioners, only two were available to attend the meeting. Three must attend in order to hold a meeting. Ken Richardson and Eldon Edwards were both available to attend, while Commissioner Charity Gambill was out of town and commissioners Walter Jones and Joe Roberts were both ill.

The meeting was rescheduled for tomorrow, Friday, at 10 a.m. Agenda items included a discussion of a land development plan, proposals for the new county flag, which has been in the works for some time; a move to reappoint the Senior Center as the lead agency on aging; a discussion of property lines with Fred Hart and other items. Overdue tax listings to be published

If you haven't paid your taxes and you own property in Alleghany County, everyone will soon know about it.

The county tax office is preparing to publish a complete list of property owners who have overdue taxes in the March 30 edition of The Alleghany News.

Those with overdue taxes who pay their bills by today, March 23, will not be listed in the advertisement.

Anyone paying their bill after today's date will still be listed in the advertisement.

The overdue listings are posted yearly in an attempt to bolster on-time tax payments.

This year's totals appear to be up from previous years, with more taxes overdue here than in recent memory.

The amount of delinquent taxes totalled around $414,000 in late February, Tax Administrator Cheryl Jones told the county commission at a recent meeting.

The advertisement of delinquent taxes is one of several requirements to foreclosing on property to garner overdue tax monies.

However, Jones said that 90 percent or more of taxpayers in the county who are listed in the advertisement pay their bills by June. Right now, there are between 45 and 50 foreclosures in the works in this county.
