After school program offers many opportunities for youth

Learning to play chess, creating a mountain craft project, learning to sketch and hearing about different career opportunities are just a small part of what students do during the Mountaineer Millennium After-School program.

Help for census available

With forms for the Census 2000 set to arrive in homes sometime next week, the Alleghany County Census Committee has been hard at work in setting up locations as help centers.

Land trust group is awarded $25k grant

Blue Ridge Rural Land Trust (BRRLT) has been named a recipient of a Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Inc. grant of $25,000 to further its work in preservation of farms and farmland in rural northwestern North Carolina.

Longer school day plan eyed by board

During their first monthly meeting, members of the Alleghany County Board of Education voted to approve a calendar flexibility resolution that, if approved, would allow the school system to extend the length of the school day.

County gives funds to help "connect" library

Commissioners agreed Monday to give the Northwestern Regional Library system an additional $6,315 in next year's budget for an Integrated Library System (ILS).
