County seeks a ban on importing pre-1976 mobile homes

The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners agreed Monday to schedule a public hearing concerning banning certain models of mobile homes from locating here in the county.

Students return after a lengthy snow break

With students returning for the first day of school in Alleghany County last Thursday and then being out again last Friday, things didn't really return to normal until early this week.

Quota cuts hurt burley farms here

Burley tobacco farmers in Alleghany took a solid blow recently when Dan Glickman, U.S.D.A. secretary of agriculture, announced a 45 percent drop in quotas.

Filing ends with flurry of activity

The filing period for Alleghany County ended Monday at noon with a flurry of activity in several races as candidates rushed to the office to have their names included on the ballot, according to Karen K. Fender, director of elections for Alleghany County.

Board sends inspector "to the toilet" again

Once again Alleghany County Building Inspector Hort Souther was criticized for his role in increasing the number of toilet facilities required at Alleghany High School's new gymatorium facility by the school board on Feb. 2.

The number of dairy farms in Alleghany County has dropped dramatically from over a 100 in operation just 20 years ago to around 25 today.

Dropout rate increases slightly in county, state

The drop-out rates for Alleghany County Schools and the state of North Carolina were released last week and they show an increase both locally and throughout the state. Part of the increase may be due to the fact that the N.C. Department of Public Instruction's rates were calculated under new rules. These new rules consider students who leave a high school to attend community college GED programs to be dropouts.
