Members of the Alleghany County School Board were given an update on the facilities plan from overseer Donald Davis during their regular meeting held Jan. 19.
The plumbing and electrical work has been roughed in both at Glade Creek and Piney Creek, according to Davis. A 60 day extension has been granted to Vannoy & Sons due to the delay generated by adding bathrooms to each school facility. The construction company had to wait until plans were finalized by the project architect before continuing.
"Is this delay generated by having to add bathrooms that the county building inspector wanted?" asked Chairman Bobby Irwin.
Davis replied that it was at least a two week delay at Alleghany High School and there was a proposal in order to change the completion date from October to December.
"I feel like it is more like a 90-day delay, due to the dirt and the bathrooms," stated Davis. "But they said they could live with a 60-day extension, if weather permits."
Davis discussed the solutions to an existing drainage problem at Glade Creek School. He said a catch basin would probably be installed to catch the run off. The drainage problem existed before any new construction was started at the school.
Board member Charles Joines asked Davis, "Be sure they don't forget it and fix it once and for all."
