A former Alleghany County Commissioner has filed for office during the last week at the Alleghany County Board of Elections office, according to Director of Elections Karen K. Fender.
Republican J. Warren Taylor announced his candidacy last Wednesday, Jan. 19.
Taylor, 50, lists an address on Spicer Mountain Road in Sparta. No other filings were reported as of the time that the office closed on Monday evening.
The filing period for all offices, both local and regional, will end on Feb. 7 at noon.
Taylor is facing 35-year-old Democrat Mickey Hall of Laurel Springs so far.
No other candidates have filed for the two open commissioner?s seats so far.
Up for election are the seats currently held by Democrat Walter Jones and Republican Joe Roberts.
Roberts, a former Alleghany County sheriff, was appointed by the Alleghany County Republican party to finish out the term of the late Bob Greene.
Greene succumbed to a fight with cancer last year and was the first commissioner known to have died while in office. Neither Roberts nor Jones, a former chairman, have yet filed for re-election.
