AHS changes schedule for improvement plan

Students who are failing a class at Alleghany High School will be required to stay an hour later than other students each Wednesday beginning on Jan. 26.

"The main purpose for the early dismissal is to intervene and give assistance to all students in every class, so that they will not fail that course," stated AHS Assistant Principal Barbara Lyon.

The change in schedule is due in part to the state’s ABC Testing Program and the new Accountability Standards.

"On Tuesday, Jan. 11, letters were sent out to all parents attached to the grade reports," stated Lyon. "What made it necessary was that students, parents and teachers are all accountable, it is not just one group."

The North Carolina Standard Course of Study outlines the content of end of course testing. Performance standards, called achievement levels, are one way that scores on the North Carolina end of course tests are reported. The achievement levels offer common meaning throughout the state as to what is expected at various levels of competence in each course. These categories are used to describe the scores on the tests and the relative performance of students.
