The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners agreed Monday to put an additional $25,000 in contingency funds to be set aside for the construction of a new softball field.
The board had already earmarked $50,000 for the project, which now has a budget of $150,000. John Woodruff and others addressed the commissioners at a public hearing concerning the application of a grant for completion of the softball field. Woodruff has worked a deal out with Vannoy & Sons Construction for part of the grading to be performed at no cost. The construction company agreed to do the work in return for the fill dirt, which will be used to level the area proposed for the Alleghany High School Gymatorium.
The softball field site was mostly timbered when the project began and trees have been removed. Woodruff informed the commissioners that additional grading will be required to level the field for play and that all of the grading was not included in the agreement he had with Vannoy & Sons.
"If we have to move a lot more dirt, it’s going to be expensive, about three times as much dirt will have to be removed," Woodruff informed commissioners. "We have enlisted as much help as we can." Woodruff said that funds for the project would be coming from the sale of the timber that was removed from the site.
