Millennium baby

Jarrett Paul Halsey was the first baby born in the new millennium at Alleghany Memorial Hospital. He was born on Jan. 1 at 5:20 p.m. to Lori and Paul Halsey of Mouth of Wilson, Va.

While some serious crimes are up, most crime is on the decline

With felonies at a three year low and misdemeanors at a four year low, it might appear that crime rates are down in the Town of Sparta.

Transportation board to help buy Bullhead

The N.C. Board of Transportation is expected to okay using $304,733 in federal funds to purchase 203 acres on Bullhead Mountain near the Blue Ridge Parkway in Alleghany County.

Break-ins reported in the area

In a crime reminiscent of the break in at Blevins Building Supply, two local businesses were hit by thieves with an interest in power tools recently.

Board changes meeting days

In a three to two vote, the Alleghany County Board of Education voted to meet twice per month and move their meetings from the traditional Monday night to Wednesday night.
