Recycling program cut back

The pickup of items through the recycling program in the Town of Sparta will be cut back to half beginning in the month of January.

During the regular meeting of the Sparta Town Council on Dec. 7, Claude Reedy of C & E Enterprise informed the members of council that he had been having problems with people leaving items out to be picked up that were not recyclable products.

"The recycling program has been going less and less, especially for the last six months," said Reedy. "We've been getting a lot of non-recyclables."

Reedy stated that most of the items left for pickup were left in black trash bags, noting that, until the bags were opened, he did not know what was left inside. He stated that he did not have time to go through the bags and sort out recyclables from other trash.

"We don't have time to go through it and nearly one-fourth is unusable," Reedy said. "I'm asking if we can temporarily suspend the recycling pickup."
