Town discusses Christmas lights

Additional Christmas decorations were placed throughout Sparta last Thursday after a request was made from a member of the Sparta Town Council during their regular monthly meeting held Dec. 7.

Council member C.J. Hendrix stated at the end of the meeting that he was displeased with the present Christmas decorations, mostly due to the fact that they did not have any lights on them and if you were in town at night, they were unrecognizable.

The current decorations were placed throughout the town by the Sparta Revitalization Committee. The committee had placed several live wreaths on the utility poles, each with a bow.

The committee had urged the downtown business merchants to coordinate their decorations with those being planned by the committee. They stressed the use of simple red bows, which is what is on the wreaths along the street. They also asked that merchants use small white lights, if they chose to use lights to decorate. In a letter from Melanie Young, Sparta Main Street Director, to all downtown merchants, she stated that the old Christmas decorations that had been used by the Town of Sparta in the past would not be used this year.

Young stated that she felt the use of live wreaths, small lights and electric candles would be classy and simple.
