Volunteers are honored with governor's awards

Several local volunteers were honored recently with governor's awards by Gov. Jim Hunt.

The governor also used the occasion to announce a program to help build 2,000 homes in the flood-ravaged areas of eastern North Carolina. The program is requesting volunteers with carpentry and other building skills to work on the task in the coming year.

Meanwhile, attending the event representing Alleghany County were County Manager Don Adams and Partnership For Children Director Bob Bamberg.

A total of six local residents were honored with awards. Receiving awards in person were Ricky Dean Johnson Jr. of Sparta; and Reba Smith of Ennice.

Other Alleghany residents who received awards but were unable to attend the ceremony were Cora Neville of Sparta; Jane Taylor of Sparta; Pauline Staton of Roaring Gap; and Mary Harless of Sparta.

According to a news release sent out by the Office of the Governor, Harless was honored for her work with the Alleghany County Historical/Genea-logical Society and for her work with AARP, the county fair and Mountain Heritage festival.

Johnson was honored for working for 10 or more hours a week with the DPS basketball program by getting equipment ready, sweeping floors, setting up the clock and serving as a referee.
