Third stabbing in three weeks reported in county

A Laurel Springs man was seriously injured in a stabbing on Elk Knob Road Sunday night.

Christmas tree event set Dec. 4

For those who are wishing to find just the right Christmas tree for their home and cut it from the field, there will be 17 farms open this Saturday for the annual Alleghany Choose and Cut Day.

The Alleghany County Sheriff's Department is seeking leads on a break in at Blevins Building Supply that happened sometime over the weekend.

Parade enjoys nice weather; Wagoners serve as marshals

After two days of rain and drizzle, the skies cleared and the sun was shining for the annual Christmas Parade that had a larger number of entrants for this year than last year's parade.

The Sparta Revitalization Committee has been busy distributing Christmas trees to area downtown business locations and are planning to continue their revitalization work with the new community development planner.

Still going at 99, Harless has made her life helping others

Mary Lyon Harless of the Pine Swamp community is proof that age doesn?t matter when it comes to being a volunteer and serving others. Mrs. Harless, 99, was recently honored by Gov. Jim Hunt as one of Alleghany County's top volunteers for 1999.
