Robbie Todd of Ennice entered the woods last Friday evening with just his bow and one borrowed arrow and emerged about four hours later with a 245-pound black bear.

Life skills classes are planned at AHS

Members of the Alleghany County Board of Education learned of several new vocational classes that can be taught at Alleghany High School in the spring semester by an instructor whose salary will be paid by Wilkes Community College during their regular monthly meeting held Monday night.

Murder case dismissed; Moxley unable to stand trial

The first-degree murder charge against William Clay Moxley Jr. in the death of his father has been dismissed, according to records on file at the Alleghany Clerk of Court's office.

Church deed returned to first owners

A deed filed in the Wilkes County Register of Deeds Office, transferring the Garden Creek Church property at Stone Mountain State Park to Dr. Paul Caudill and with the property to go to the N.C. Baptist Foundation upon Dr. Caudill's Death, was ruled null and void by Resident Wilkes Superior Court Judge Michael E. Helms Nov. 5.

Town vote canvass complete

The Town of Sparta's vote canvass yielded no surprises Friday as vote totals remained the same upon the second count.

Sage is released on bond

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Chasdity Calhoun Sage, formerly of Sparta, has been released on a $50,000 bond, according to a spokesperson for the J. Reuben Long Detention Center here.

E911 road signs made "in house"

Alleghany County's E911 Coordinator, Michelle Dancy, is now making the county's road signs "in-house" with a lettering machine and sign blanks.

Touch screens get high voter approval

The EasyVote 2000 computerized voting system got high marks from voters during last week's town election, according to Alleghany County Elections Director Karen K. Fender.
