Many property owners or vehicle owners in Alleghany received notices last week from a collection agency that their taxes were past due and the collection agency was now in charge of the account.
"The tax office has exhausted all their means to collect delinquent taxes, especially on vehicles," said Alleghany Tax Administrator Cheryl Jones.
According to Jones, the ones who received notices from the collection agency have been sent two notifications before the collection agency's notice. Those who received notices concerning automobile taxes are from two years and the real property can be up to 10-years-old.
"We sent reminder notices on all these accounts," Jones said. "Basically, that is our way of collecting these overdue taxes."
Around 4,000 notices have been sent out throughout the county by the collection agency. The agency is Transworld Systems Incorporated from Charlotte and they are getting the information via the Internet from the computers located in the Alleghany Tax Office.
The 4,000 notices were both vehicle and real property tax notices. Obtaining a collection agency to pursue the collections was discussed by the county commissioners at a previous meeting.
