During the regular monthly meeting of the Alleghany County Board of Education, members of the board heard an improvement plan for Alleghany High School.
A team from Raleigh has been visiting AHS recently at the request of Principal Jim Halsey. At the time of the meeting held Monday night, the team had visited AHS four times and had interviewed teachers, students and administration and had presented an assessment to faculty.
A representative of the team from Raleigh addressed the board about what the "no recognition" rating meant for AHS.
"I want to make clear what that status is - it gets different representation with the media," she said. "No recognition means that the school doesn't show growth."
She stated that AHS had a 54.5 percent proficiency level, and a number of high schools in the state did not meet that number of proficiency. If a school has less than 50 percent proficiency, they are rated as a low performing school.
The school did not meet it's expected growth, she noted.
