About half of 125 acres recently purchased by the state for $405,000 will be added to Stone Mountain State Park, with the other half going to the National Park Service (NPS) as Blue Ridge Parkway property.
The land, known as the Liddle property, adjoins the south side of Parkway property in Alleghany County. It includes part of the upper watershed of Bullhead Creek, which is a native trout stream in Stone Mountain State Park. The tract is near Bullhead Mountain and Mahogany Rock Mountain.
Vivien Marcus, resource management specialist with the N.C. Division of State Parks, said the land was purchased to help protect that watershed and also to protect scenic vistas within Stone Mountain State Park and from the Parkway. The 125 acres is near the Wilkes County line.
The state park service is deeding about 60 acres of the Liddle property to the NPS in return for getting a similar amount of land from the NPS southwest of the 125 acres, said Ms. Marcus.
