Sparta man slain; son charged in hammer attack

A 17-year-old Sparta man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his father and namesake, William Clay Moxley Sr., according to warrants filed by Det. Lt. Wayne Crouse of the Sparta Police Department.

County voting machines to be selected Thursday

The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners were informed Tuesday that the bids for voting machines were opened on Sept. 2 at 2 p.m.

During a special called meeting of the Alleghany County Board of Education last Friday, a letter of resignation was received from Alleghany High School band director Chris Jones.

Vandals strike at high school

Less than a month after the beginning of the new school year, the Alleghany High School campus was vandalized during the late night hours of last Thursday or early Friday morning.

Liddle property, 125 acres, sold to state for $405,000

About half of 125 acres recently purchased by the state for $405,000 will be added to Stone Mountain State Park, with the other half going to the National Park Service (NPS) as Blue Ridge Parkway property.
