After hearing that a horse in Carroll County, Va. tested positive for equine infectious anemia (EIA) last week, some horse owners in the county may be wondering about the health of their horses.
The laws governing equine differ slightly in North Carolina and Virginia. A test is available through a veterinarian to test a horse for EIA. This checkup for the disease is called a Coggins test and is performed by drawing blood from the animal to check for the virus.
A vaccine does not exist for EIA and there is no known treatment for the disease.
According to Charles Young, agricultural extension agent, a horse is required to have a negative result.
