A probable cause hearing for Billy Dean Whitaker of Sparta has been postponed until August 17 in Alleghany County District Court, according to the Alleghany Clerk of Court's Office.
Whitaker, 46, has been charged with first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He is charged with slitting the throats of Brenda Whitaker and John Wayne Mullis in a home on Ballpark Road that belonged to the female victim. The incident occurred on June 28.
Brenda Bumgarner Whitaker was both Billy Dean Whitaker's former wife and sister-in-law.
