Anyone can tell you that warm and sunny days, cool nights, no rain and large crowds make for perfect conditions for a fiddler's convention.

And that was just what greeted the throngs of visitors who crowded into the Carlisle Higgins Agricultural Fairgrounds in Sparta last Friday and Saturday for the fifth-annual Alleghany County Fiddler's Convention.

The event was sponsored by the Fiddler's Convention Committee of the Alleghany Fairgrounds Inc. jointly with the Sparta/Alleghany Volunteer Fire Department. This is the first year that the fire department has been involved with the event.

Lynn Worth, secretary of the Fiddler's Convention Committee, said that the partnership proved beneficial to all. "We really appreciate their help," she said. "It really worked out well."

Crowds were termed "biggest ever" by organizers, with the entire fairgrounds filled with campsites ranging from small tents to air conditioned recreational vehicles.
