During their regular meeting held Monday night, the Alleghany County Board of Education looked at ways to change the present sports schedule currently held by the Alleghany High School.

Due to a change in conference playing, Alleghany High School changed its sports schedule last year to accommodate the new conference. During the basketball season, four games were played in one night. Sometimes four games were played two night a week.

This has brought about some concern from parents and school officials.

"When they play four games, it is hard for parents to get there and for students to get a good night's rest and be back in school at 8 a.m. in the morning," said Superintendent Duane Davis.

Alleghany High School Principal Jim Halsey is a chairman on the committee for the conference scheduling. Davis had other school's in the conference contacted to see what their views were on the subject.

Most of the superintendents and principals of each school in the conference seemed to be in favor of a change in schedule, except for the Mount Airy school official.

Alleghany is part of the Northwest 1A conference this includes six other schools. The other schools in the conference are: Elkin, East Surry, East Wilkes, Mount Airy, North Stokes and Starmount.

The North Carolina Athletic Association informed Davis that the local schools in the conference make the decision.

Some nights during the basketball season, four games are played during one night.

"We have to convince each of those schools it is important to break it up," Davis said, referring to the schedule. "The Mount Airy school said they would have to hire more coaches."

Attorney Bynum Marshall gave a report to the board concerning the legal standpoint of the schedule change. This was done during a Use policy set by Fairgrounds Committee

A use policy has been set for the Carlisle Higgins Agricultural Fairgrounds by the fairgrounds.

The policy was set in force by the Alleghany County Commissioners and members of the Alleghany Fairgrounds Board of Directors.

The policy states the use of the center and fairgrounds complex is a public use facility designed and constructed for the use of Alleghany citizens. The uses may be for recreational, education and profitable endeavors. A note on the policy states that maximum use of the complex by the citizens is encouraged.

The use policy contains a priority list. The top priority is listed as projects affiliated with Alleghany County governmental activities. Projects affiliated with Alleghany Fairgrounds is listed as the second priority. The third priority is activities for public, non-profit and educational groups. Last on the list of priorities is for private and for-profit groups.

"This policy was put in use because more groups are utilizing the facilities."
