The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners agreed by consensus Monday to attempt to negotiate a lease for new "touch-screen" voting machines. By choosing a lease arrangement, the county bypassed an often-lengthy bidding process. The county did not officially vote on the move.
If taking bids, the county would have to have at least three companies to bid after the specifications for the machines was advertised.
If three companies did not bid, then advertisements would have to be placed again before the county could accept any machine. This could hamper an attempted trial run for the new computerized voting machines in November during the town's elections.
As for the machines that were selected on the recommendation of the Alleghany County Board of Elections, they are called EasyVote 2000.
