An article that started two years ago on The New River, finally made the June issue of National Geographic.

The author, Roff Smith, actually travels the New River through the Appalachia and relates a story of the people and places he encounters along the way.

"We were very pleased with the coverage," said Sandy Davidson, Director of the National Committee for the New River. "They treated the river and the river folks very well."

Davidson explained that about two years ago the magazine had sent a photographer and a writer to do a feature spread on the river.

The magazine had accepted the photos, but not the article and sent Smith back to write it.

Davidson said he had traveled the stretch of the river that he took Smith down numerous times in a canoe. After explaining to Smith that he was in good hands, they proceeded on their journey down the river. About 300 yards into their adventure, Davidson encountered some rapids and accidentally ended up dumping Smith from the canoe.

"He must have forgave me, for it didn't get in the article," Davidson said.

The article follows the river with photos and interviews along the way. A two-page photo is featured on the West Virginia River Gorge Bridge.
