Commissioners wrangle budget

During a budget workshop held by the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners Monday evening, the fate of a new county position was the topic of a lengthy discussion.

At the end of the workshop, an in-home aide position requested by Alleghany Council on Aging, had still not been decided upon. The position had not been recommended by County Manager Don Adams. The council had requested an amount of $102,000 to be budgeted to their agency this year. Adams made a recommendation of $87,500 to the board. Commissioner Eldon Edwards asked if the lower amount would have an impact on the services the agency renders.

Adams replied that grant money was usually available to the agency later on in the year. "Last year, state money was available and we paid 20 percent of last year's," Adams said. "The county will be paying 100 percent of the salary."

Commissioner Edwards asked, "What if they don"t get any more after the budget is finalized" It bothers me that people may be needing services they can't have."
