A Mooresville man has put in a rezoning request to the town to accommodate a funeral home here in the county.

Kurt Nichols of Southern Construction has requested the town to review the present zoning classification of six lots along the intersection of Reynolds Road and Collins Road in Sparta. The lots are now zoned for residential use.

Nichols has requested the zoning be changed from residential to neighborhood business.

The application that Nichols filled out for the the request states that the proposed use of the property will be for a funeral home.

The application says that the land is currently "vacant."

Nichols was not available for comment as of presstime Tuesday.

Grandview Funeral Home, which is located on Grandview Drive in Sparta, has been the only funeral home in the county since around 1980.

Sturdivant's Funeral Home closed its operation in Alleghany around that time.
