The North Carolina Department of Transportation will be presenting plans for the secondary road construction program in Alleghany at a meeting on May 11 at 7 p.m.
Alleghany County Board of Commissioners and representatives from NCDOT will hold a public hearing in the Alleghany County office building on Main Street in Sparta to discuss the proposed plans for the 1999-2000 Secondary Road Construction Program.
This county is anticipating an allocation of $2.4 million. a percentage of the allocated amount is to go toward paving unpaved roads.
The total cost of the rural unpaved road work will be $1.9 million to pave a total of 9.74 miles.
Among the rural unpaved roads that are on the proposal to be upgraded are Ridge Glenn Road, Rich Mountain Road, Brown Road, Waterfall Road, Scenic Valley Road, Doughton Mountain Road, and Cleary Road.
Improvements to paved roads that are being considered are Saddle Mountain Church Road, and Old Barrett Road. The paved improvements would total eight percent of the total allotted amount. The improvements slated are to replace number 42 bridge on Saddle Mountain Church Road, and bridge number 193 on Old Barrett Road. The estimated cost for each of the bridge replacements is $100,000 each.
There is an allocated amount of $234,205 in the plan for spot stabilization to unpaved road improvements. This is about nine-and-a-half percent of the total amount. There are 58 roads listed for spot improvements.
The plan also sets aside $105,647 for a contingency fund, which will be used for staking, right of way acquisition, road additions, emergencies, overdrafts, and paving entrances to certified rescue squads and fire departments.
The plan noted that the proposed work is subject to availability of funding, right of way and environmental review.
