After an apparently surprising vote during the county commissioner's meeting Monday, Alleghany County School Board members were uncertain of what the next step was in the school facilities planning.
"In a surprise move to me, a motion to (approve) option four (the full plan) failed on a two to three vote," said Superintendent Duane Davis at the regular school board meeting Monday night.
At the county commissioner's meeting held April 5, a tie vote was cast for the full facilities plan, which included the gymatorium. Every one of the commissioners had supported the rest of the plan. The absence of commissioner Bob Greene stalemated the motion, and school board Chairman Bobby Irwin said earlier that the vote would have gone in the school's favor had Greene been present.
However, Greene was able to be present at this Monday's commissioner meeting, and cast his vote against the full plan. Greene said he supports the gymatorium and the full plan, but favors a bond referendum in lieu of a lease-purchase agreement. He is the only commissioner in favor of a referendum.
At the school board meeting Monday, Davis noted that Commissioner Eldon Edwards wanted alterations to the plan and voiced those opinions at the commissioners meeting April 5. Davis said that Edwards wanted an option to add the gymatorium at a later date. A meeting was held between Davis, County Manager Don Adams and School Board Chairman Bobby Irwin where a conference call was made to the architect.
