While many local residents were unhappy about the driving conditions in the area last week, some took the opportunity to have some fun.

Over 100 grams of "crank" seized

More than 100 grams of methamphetamine (also known as crank) with a street value of nearly $4,000 were seized along with $2,200 cash after a month-long investigation by the Alleghany County Sheriff's Department. 


Overdue tax listings set for printing 

If you haven't paid your property taxes for 1998, there is still time to pay before your name is posted among the delinquent tax listings. 

Hearing date changed for school plan 

The public hearing on a building plan for school facilities that was set for March 4 has been moved to March 18. 


Man fatally injured in wreck 

 A 45-year-old man, who was formerly an Alleghany County resident, was fatally injured in a car accident early last Saturday at 2 a.m. on Glade Valley Road, according to a report filed by Trooper R.L. Lane.


Sudden snow storms snarl traffic, surprise motorists 

March 3 dumped around six inches of snow on Alleghany, while another storm early Tuesday morning brought another three inches.

Alleghany Memorial to expand 

Following a presentation by Alleghany Memorial Hospital regarding the proposed expansion of their facilities, the Sparta Town Council, during its regular meeting on March 2, approved a resolution of intent to close requested streets and set a date for a public hearing regarding the issue. 

Woodie's contributions to the area highlighted

After serving as executive director of the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce for the past seven years and amassing a long list of accomplishments, Patrick Woodie, who will vacate his position at the chamber the end of this month, offers this piece of advise to whomever is picked to fill his shoes.
