The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners approved a contract Monday night to have BFI of Concord haul the county's solid waste for a five-year period at a rate of $35.75 per ton.

The new rate will save the county about $7.26 per ton, which means savings of about $50,000 per year. The county averages about 7,500 tons per year of refuse.

Under the contract, new stipulations included having a collection trailer available at the landfill at all times, that the county be closed on some holidays to match the closing policy of BFI and that the county be charged for 20 tons per load regardless of the amount actually hauled to BFI.

The 20 ton amount will be figured based on the average for a monthly basis, according to County Manager Don Adams. This means that the total number of loads per month and total tonnage per month are averaged out for billing purposes and the county is charged according to that average, not by each individual load.

The trailers can legally haul up to 22 tons of refuse.

"They're going to require that we have a minimum of 20 tons per load," Adams said. "I don't see that as being a problem. I believe that will average out to where we have a minimum of 20 tons per load going down the mountain."
