Local Art Student Honors Hospice

Amanda Musgrove, local  art student,  volunteered to paint a to-scale enlargement of the Hospice stamp, honoring the Alleghany  Hospice, on her own time.


Woodie to leave chamber 

Woodie is leaving his post to accept another first-ever position - he has been named the first executive director for a
three-state conglomerate formed as a result of the American Heritage Rivers Initiative. 


BFI transfer facility deal is validated 

The Alleghany County Board of Commissioners approved a contract Monday night to have BFI of Concord haul the
county's solid waste for a five-year period at a rate of $35.75 per ton. 

Hearing on school plan set tonight 

A public hearing on a plan that, if approved, will lead the county to borrow about $1.4 million and increase taxes by one to two cents will be held tonight, March 4. 


Burley tobacco woes continue for farmers 

Due in part to a 45 percent increase in cigarette prices since January, local farmers are faced with a 28 percent drop in quotas for burley tobacco. 


Bristol Compressors nets '98 ESC employer award 

Bristol Compressors has been awarded the Employment Security Commission's Employer Award for 1998. 

Alleghany County's oldest and largest newspaper is now taking applications for a full time news reporter. Prefer candidate with photography experience and good writing skills. Heart fund raises over $14,000

Total proceeds for the 32nd annual WCOK Radio Heart Auction totalled $14,218, according to event chairperson Virginia Setzer. 

Alleghany man, now inmate, helps supervisor having seizure

If you base your beliefs on what you've seen in movies or on  television, you probably think that inmates on a road crew would  bolt and run for freedom if their supervisor even looked the other way for a split second.
