County may apply for $1.5 million loan for school facilities  

Alleghany County is one step closer to a major school construction plan after the Alleghany County Board of Commissioners agreed Monday to check into the feasibility of entering into a $1.5 million lease purchase arrangement.

Concord group bids lowest on waste transfer

A landfill management company from Concord was the overall lowest bidder for the hauling and disposal of the county's solid waste for the next three to five years, pending a contract negotiation.


Partnership lists dental care as a chief concern

Top concerns of Alleghany County families were discussed at a series of four community meetings conducted by the Alleghany Partnership for Children.

"The meetings identified the lack of dental care in the county as a big problem," said Bob Bamberg, executive director of the partnership.


Heart Auction geared up for Saturday

This Saturday, Feb. 20th, will mark the 32nd year that the Alleghany branch of the American Heart Association (AHA) has held its annual heart fund radio auction.

The auction, which is broadcast live over WCOK AM 1060 in Sparta, will begin at 9:05 a.m. and will continue throughout the day until sign-off.

Sparta native authors book of columns

A former Sparta resident is making his debut as an author in a new compilation of newspaper columns entitled Waking up in a Cornfield.

Softball query denied

The Alleghany County School Board learned during its regular meeting Monday night that a request to return to a slow-pitch softball format was turned down by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA).
