Council OK's apartment zoning plans 

Sparta Town Council unanimously approved rezoning a section of land on N.C. 18 so that a moderate-income apartment complex could be constructed. 

The change in zoning allows a multi-family structure, but the property's zoning will revert back to residential should the new complex not be built. 


Parkway closed for repair near Mahogany Rock 

About a 1/4-mile stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway has been closed for repairs, according to District Ranger Brent Pennington. 

The closed section begins at milepost 235.2 and is about 1/2 mile south of Mahogany Rock, Pennington noted. 


School board allocates ADM funds to help pay for facilities project

The Alleghany Board of Education approved a memorandum of understanding concerning the ADM funds at a called meeting Monday night. 

ADM funds consist of a percentage of corporate income tax that is deposited quarterly into an ADM fund. 


Exchange student from Brazil visits Alleghany

A new exchange student from Brazil started classes at Alleghany High School in January. Her name is Luiza Curcio.

Curcio started school here at the beginning of this semester after the snow and winter weather gave students an extra week out of school after Christmas.


Alleghany County's oldest and largest newspaper is now taking applications for a full time news reporter. Prefer candidate with photography experience and good writing skills. Chamber seeks old home pics 

The Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce is seeking pictures of old homes that used to line the streets of Sparta. 

In particular, the chamber wants pictures of the homes that were formerly on Main Street or N.C. 18 in the downtown area.
