School plans may lead to 1-2¢ tax hike

The Alleghany County Board of Education presented a plan to the county commissioners Monday night that would require the county to borrow about $1.4 million. 


School board preps plan for county board

The Alleghany County Board of Education finalized their facilities plan at the called meeting on Jan. 28 to take to the county commissioners' meeting on Feb. 1. 

Paramedic service may begin Feb. 9

Pending successfull inspection by state 

The county's EMT- Paramedics may begin working with their new credentials as early as Tuesday, Feb. 9. 


Sparks fly at Sparta Square after  truck hits power line 

A 10-18  emergency  fire call to Sparta Square Shopping Center last  Friday morning turned out to be an electrical  surge that singed wiring, but never actually  ignited material or burst into flames. 

The Sparta Volunteer Fire Department, Sparta Police Department and other emergency personnel came to the scene. 


Ramps for disabled and elderly made available through CAP

 Community Health Services (also known as CAP) of Alleghany is  helping disabled and handicapped adults have ramps built onto their  homes.

Man injured on farm tractor urges caution

"I looked up and saw it up above me and I knew it was the end of time," explained 70-year-old Dean Edwards of Sparta about the tractor accident he had on Jan. 22.

The Alleghany JobLink office and the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce are planning their second annual Job Fair, termed "Job Fair '99".
