Rabid Doe is Found on Stone Mountain

The state's third known rabies case in a deer, and the second in Wilkes County, has been confirmed in an adult doe found in Stone Mountain State Park last week.

Paramedic service will begin here

In a surprise move last Friday, the county's EMS workers signed off to be certified as paramedics, despite the fact that they did not get the pay increase that they were requesting. 

News sports editor lands press award

Sports Editor Conley Tribble was honored with a third-place photography award from the North Carolina Press Association at a ceremony today, Jan. 28, in Chapel Hill.

Crouse has made volunteer work a way of life 

Alleghany native Clara Crouse sees volunteerism not only as an act of kindness, but something that should be a way of life. 

In December, Crouse was honored with the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce's Volunteer of the Year award for 1998. 


Tree heist suspect arrested

One of two men charged with the embezzlement of $11,000 worth of Christmas trees has been arrested in Savannah, Ga., according to Det. Ricky Lyall of the Alleghany County Sheriff's Department.

A surprise early 90th birthday celebration was held at Piney Creek Elementary School for Foster Grandparent Lena Douglas on Jan. 22.
